It feels like it’s been a while since I talked about my current projects! I’ve been a bit slower at completing crochet projects since most of my creative energy nowadays goes into working on this site… But I’m still crafting! And here’s what I'm currently working on:
The charity grind continues, and today I finally weaved in the ends on the Bonbon Blanket!
This project was a bit of a slog, not gonna lie. Working the body section was slow but easy and mindless. The border, however, was a pain!
As I mentioned in my first post about this, I’m making these items with donated yarn. That means different brands, different dye lots, and—in some cases—different generations of yarn. This blanket is made entirely with Red Heart Super Saver (RHSS), but half of it uses the softer, modern variety of RHSS and the other half is the rough, older variety.
In particular, the solid pink I planned to use for the border is “old” RHSS. That means it’s slightly thicker than the print RHSS, so I needed to take extra care to avoid ruffling the border (i.e., if the border is wider than the thing it’s attached to, the extra fabric will bunch and make ruffles.) I made two attempts at adding a flat border and failed both times. In the end, I went with a one-round single crochet border and called it finished. Pick your battles, right?
I’ve also started Batch 3 of the Camino Beanies using Caron Simply Soft in Bone, Plum Wine, and Sage. I’m pretty proud of how these hats are turning out. It took several tries, but I successfully modified the original pattern to be made-to-measure with any yarn!
The errors of my trial-and-error process were pretty atrocious though...
I’ve also started a new blanket project, which I’m temporarily calling the Cloud Cake Blanket. This one will be a gift to my boyfriend’s nephew for Christmas!
I’m using Caron Cloud Cakes Perfect Phasing yarn in Coral, Royal, and Golden. And I am not exaggerating at all when I say that this is the softest, lightest yarn I've ever used. It’s so warm despite being so featherlight. Once I finish the project and wash and block it, I’ll write a review for my digital garden.
I’m using the Interlocking Block Stitch for this blanket, with all the colors starting on the same end. As the blanket grows, all three colors will fade out into white. I’ll definitely need to get another cake for a border, and any extra will become a matching hat.
I’m really, really excited to see how this one turns out!
On another note, my boyfriend brought home some free yarn from his workplace It's all good-quality acrylic, which is PERFECT for charity items. Working with these will be a refreshing change of pace from the odd, old skeins I've gotten used to. Can't wait!
