What’s On My Hook This Week

I’m on a crochet grind for charity!

Last month, a member of a crochet Discord I belong to gave me 15lbs of mixed acrylic yarn from their stash that they were looking to re-home. My personal challenge now is to turn as much of this yarn (plus some leftovers from my stash) into as many donatable items before December 1!

I’ve made decent progress so far:

Not bad for 1 month of work! I’ve got so much more yarn to get through, so here’s what’s on my hook this week:

Pumpkin Mesh Scarf

I’ve decided that any odd skeins of yarn that don’t match enough with others to turn into a blanket will become scarves or hats. So, I started this scarf 2 weeks ago, using 2 skeins of Loops & Threads Soft & Shiny in Pumpkin, and the pattern is a 2-row repeat that makes a mesh fabric. The pattern is not reversible, but both sides look similar enough to not be noticeable when worn.

The airy stitch pattern plus the sleek, soft yarn makes for a very drapey scarf! I’m using up as much of this yarn as I can, so this’ll probably be a long or extra long scarf. And because I hate making fringe, I’m thinking of adding a bobble trim to the ends of this instead.

Bonbon Blanket

This is my second blanket for this charity challenge. I’ve got 4 skeins of Red Heart Super Saver in Bonbon and 1 in Pretty n’ Pink. Whether or not this becomes a baby blanket or a lap blanket depends on the final length.

Though it’s improved over the years, RHSS is notoriously rough and stiff. To counteract this, I opted for an airy stitch to add drape. And since this is couch project to work on while watching tv or waiting for game queues, I wanted a stitch that I could work easily and mindlessly. Therefore, I settled on the Wattle Stitch, which is a 1-row repeat that’s worked into chain spaces.

In the future, I plan to add a project gallery to this site. I think it’ll be nice to have a wall of all my work with my project notes and pattern/yarn links for folks who may want to make some something similar. Soon, soon!

I suppose I should introduce myself. I’m Cora. I’m 30+ years old, and I miss the old internet.

I jumped on the blogging bandwagon as a teen in the early 2000s and bounced from platform to platform—Blogger, Wordpress, Xanga. I picked up bits of HTML and CSS knowledge along the way, eager to make my blog feel unique to me and all my precious thoughts.

In my final years of high school, I got my first domain name and learned how to navigate webhosts and content management systems. I joined a blog ring and made internet friends across the pond. I remember them clearly. One was a girl my age, perhaps a little older, who lived in Canada. She played violin and often shared her struggles of high academic expectations from her parents. Another was a young woman in the Netherlands, whose life I found particularly exotic, with snapshots of her and her boyfriend in various European cities. These weren’t intimate friendships, mind you, but they were important to me. Seeing little snippets of others’ lives somehow made me feel like I belonged to a global neighborhood.

But you know how that’s changed over time. Social networks that were originally meant to connect us have become mills for content, alluring and addictive, monetizing your time and attention. Sharing your life for the sake of sharing your life is unheard of. Having a public social media account means you’re a content creator, a business owner, a public figure, an expert, or an influencer. But I’m not interested in connecting with folks in that way. I miss making friends.

So, yeah. That’s why I’m here. I was thrilled to discover NeoCities and the genuine humanness of it all. I love the wild layouts and the niche content and the peculiar art and writing. I love the broken links and the works in progress. When I browse everyone’s sites, I’m charmed by all your creativity and personality. I’m happy to be a part of it. I hope this post is the first among many.
